How do engagement rings and wedding bands hold up to handwashing?
I have OCD and wash my hands very frequently and vigorously. I’m also currently shopping for an engagement ring and wedding band and wondering if my handwashing should make a difference in what design and gems I ultimately decide on.
Are there any metals that would be better for the setting or metals I should stay away from?
I am figuring most days I will just wear my wedding band, not my engagement ring, which should help….so would I be better off getting a plain band, one without gems then? What if the band had several inlaid gems…would hot water and soap cause damage?
Bot white and yellow gold hold up well to soap and water. Some gems are considered soft and some are hard like diamonds. It would take an awful lot of washings to change a good diamond.
there are many gems suitable for wedding rings. Most gem rings require washings with mild soap and water.
There is this awsome site that allows you to choose the gem and it will show you a picture, and describe the features, where the are found, the degree of hardness and the degree of roughness it can be exposed to. It tells you how to clean them.

Just a word, when you go looking for your ring, forget the OCD (for a few moments) and get the most beautiful ring you desire. You will know it when you see it. It will be the ring you will see on your hand for the rest of your life. If it needs special care, so what. You will do what you have to do to take care of it and also live within the demands of your OCD. Settle on which gold, what color stone, what type of gem, the cut of the stone and enjoy yourself. Your ring will please you everyday if you choose it from your heart. The ring must fit into your life the same as you OCD does. But the ring is there to make you happy in your new married life.
